1.  What are Disposable Plastics?

Disposable plastics are products that are made primarily from fossil fuel–based chemicals. They are meant to be disposed right after the use.

Disposable plastic packaging is something we use every day to protect, store, and transport things safely. We use it for lots of things like to store food and beverages.

2. What are disposable plastics used for and what materials are they made from?

Disposable plastic packagings are commonly used for take-away meals in local food establishments and are usually made of plastic materials such as polystyrene (PS) and polypropylene (PP).

Some primary materials used to make disposable plastics:

PET: Is very commonly used plastic. It is lightweight, strong, and transparent. PET also can be used for food packaging. We come across with PET plastic in almost all grocery stores. It is used to package drinks, medicine, cleaning products and keeps air out and protects the product inside. PET plastic is also one of the easiest types of plastic to recycle. Examples of things made from PET plastic include drink bottles, food jars (like for peanut butter, and honey), and polyester clothing or rope.

Polystyrene (PS): Is a versatile plastic that is used to make a wide range of consumer products. It's a hard, clear plastic that's often used for food packaging, takeout containers, and laboratory supplies that need to be transparent. Polystyrene is also used in manufacture of cutlery, plates and cups.

Polypropylene (PP): Are great for storing hot food and microwavable meals because they have a high melting point. They're also used for durable items like syrup bottles.

3. What are the benefits of using plastic packagings?

We use disposable plastic to protect and preserve our food and products, keeping them fresh for longer and reducing food waste. Plastic packaging is hygienic and versatile, helping to convey important information such as use-by dates and allergens. It also enables us to enjoy a wider variety of fresh foods year-round and helps to keep healthcare affordable and safe with items like blood bags and syringes.

4. What are alternatives for disposable plastic packaging?

Plastic waste has long been one of the biggest ecological problems in our daily lives. However, many plastic products have many suitable alternatives, from reusable packaging to sustainable single-use solutions. Here are some alternatives for disposable plastic packaging:

Cardboard: It is no secret that cardboard is gaining popularity as a green plastic substitute. It's renewable, adaptable, and recyclable. Cardboard has several advantages as a material for boxes, bowls, cups, and plates. To reduce waste, many businesses are now packaging their products in plain cardboard. You can use cardboard boxes to replace storage containers in your home.

Wood: Wood is a domestic renewable raw material. Eco-friendly disposable cutlery such as knives, forks and spoons are made from wood. The material is stable, tasteless and odorless. Also, it is harmless to the body.

As a renewable resource, wood can replace plastic in household items such as cleaning brushes, kitchen utensils and cutting boards.

Glass: Is a great option for food containers because it's cheap, easy to recycle, and can be reused for a long time. You can even turn old glass jars into new food containers. Glass is also good for storing homemade food and drinks like jam and pickles. Using glass containers instead of plastic ones is better for the environment. They are more convenient for cooking and storing food. Plus, glass doesn't hold onto germs, so it's safe to reheat food or wash it at high temperatures. It's a safe and eco-friendly alternative to plastic bottles.

Bamboo: is a fast-growing plant that can be used instead of plastic for things like tableware and straws. It's lightweight, strong, and can be composted. Bamboo can be used to make many different eco-friendly products, like cutlery, tissues, and serving trays. Bamboo also has natural abilities, like filtering air and water, and it's very sturdy. Using bamboo products is good for the environment because they're biodegradable, easy to grow, and long-lasting. There are many bamboo alternatives to plastic for everyday items.

PET: Plastic bottles are usually made from PET. It is called PET when used plastic is cleaned and made into new plastic containers. This recycling method is good for the environment and reduces the need for new plastics.

Using PET is better for the environment than creating new plastic because it uses less petroleum. Consumers will not notice the difference between fresh plastic and PET. Recycled plastic containers are hygienic, tasteless, sturdy and lightweight. Our boxes, trays, and lids are made from 100% PET and are transparent so you can see the food inside. PET cups are also good for drinks on the go.

5. What are the environmental impacts of disposable plastic packagings?

The chemicals used to make plastics can be very harmful. This applies to people, animals and all wildlife. The process of manufacturing plastics consumes a lot of energy and leaves a huge carbon

footprint. We are so used to use it in our daily life that we stop thinking about the harmful impact of using it. There is already a large amount of plastic in the world.

By recycling the plastic we reduce pollution and the impact of using raw materials and producing new plastics on the environment. You'll also help ensure plastic doesn't end up in the ocean or other unwanted places by recycling it. Plastic packaging is widely used due to its many advantages such as sustainability, flexibility, and it is cheap. But we need to think about the environment because we use so much of plastic.

Plastic is a big problem because it never biodegrades. Instead, it gets smaller and smaller until it becomes nanoparticles. These particles end up in our soil, water, and air, which is not good for us. We produce hundreds of millions of tons of plastic each year, most of which cannot be recycled. They end up in landfills and in the oceans. This is harmful for the environment. That's why we need to find better ways to use less plastic and use other materials that are better for the environment.

It is clear that we need to use less plastic, move to more eco- friendly products and services, and develop technologies to recycle plastic more efficiently.

Remember, when you buy something, it somehow has an impact on the environment. Even products made from materials like glass and metal still require energy to create and transport. So, if you want to switch from plastic to something more sustainable, you need to use these alternatives again and again. The key is to choose well-made, long-lasting products that you can use multiple times. This way, you'll get the most out of your purchase and reduce waste.
