1. What are disposable cups used for and what materials are they made from?

Disposable cups are used in catering establishments, offices, and educational institution canteens to serve hot and cold beverages such as tea, coffee, juice, sparkling and still water, and fizzy drinks. These cups are practical and portable, allowing you to enjoy your favorite drink on the go. Most importantly, it saves you the hassle of washing dishes. Disposable cups are made of materials such as paper, polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), and PET.

Paper cups: keep hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold because of the thick layers of paper used in their manufacture. This makes it easier to hold the cup. A protective cover for paper cups intended for serving in catering establishments allows you to keep your drinks at the right temperature. Plus, the protective lid prevents liquids from spilling. Designed for hot and cold beverages such as tea, coffee, and hot chocolate, these paper cups do not pollute the environment. Recycling these disposable cups won't harm the environment as they are only made from eco-friendly materials. The interior is covered with an inner laminate layer to increase the sustainability of the cups. This keeps the liquids in the glass from mixing. As a result, liquids of all temperatures can be stored safely and without hesitation in such disposable cups for long periods of time. According to the design features, paper cups are divided into two categories, single-layer, and double-layer.

Single-layer paper cups: These paper cups are suitable for serving cold soft drinks, juices, sodas, water, and milk.

Double layer paper cup: has become a staple of hospitality packaging. Intended for use in beverages with temperatures above 80 degrees such as tea, coffee, and hot chocolate.

Polystyrene cups (PS): Hot water cannot be poured into these cups as the polystyrene that is a part of these cups can break down and penetrate into the liquid. These types of cups should not be used for alcoholic beverages, as alcoholic beverages will also destroy polystyrene cups. Such disposable cups are intended for cold juices, sparkling beverages, soft drinks, water, and other cold beverages.

Polypropylene cups (PP): Designed for both cold and hot beverages, these mugs are commonly found in fast food restaurants. These mugs start melting at temperatures above 40 degrees.

PET Containers: Designed for cold and refreshing beverages such as smoothies, cocktails, lemonades, fruit juices, and mineral water. 3. What are the environmental impacts of disposable cups?

In addition to the benefits of disposable cups, we must also emphasize the environmental impact of some materials such as plastic, which are used to manufacture some cups.

Around 500 billion plastic disposable cups are utilized around the world each year. Because they are thrown away immediately after being used once, these cups end up in landfills and oceans, harming the environment. Considering that plastic cups take about 500 years to disintegrate in the environment, we are causing long-term and irreversible damage to the environment. Unfortunately, that`s not the only problem: According to a study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, each plastic cup is made up of about 3.2 grams of gasoline. By 2050, plastic may account for 20% of global oil consumption.

Despite all these problems, the demand for disposable cups is constantly increasing. Many people find reusable cups less convenient because they often forget to carry them around, and some feel that single-use cups are harmful to the environment.

Disposable cups are products made of paper or plastic. These cups are mainly used in food and delivery services and are widely used in the food and beverage industry.

Some of these cups are recyclable. Unlike plastic, which is one of the environmentally harmful materials used in the production of disposable cups, disposable paper cups are recyclable and eco-friendly. Paper cups are becoming more and more popular around the world because they are eco-friendly and prevent the spread of food poisoning. Disposable paper cups are biodegradable as they are made from 100% natural materials.

To help reduce the use of plastic waste, some coffee shops and cafes offer discounts to customers who bring their own cups. This in turn encourages many people to cause less harm to the environment.

Thus, by choosing to use recyclable disposable cups, each of us can play a positive role in protecting the environment.
